<br /> Want a new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/01/officially-official-volkswagen-amarok-pickup-makes-the-scene/">Volkswagen Amarok</a> pickup truck? Well then, now would be the time to let VW know about your interest. Speaking to our man Mike Levine at PickupTrucks.com, Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, says that the automaker would need 100,000 takers per year in order to make any money on the Amarok here in the States.<br /> <br /> That would be a daunting task for the automaker as the only non full-sized truck that sold that many units last year was the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/tacoma">Toyota Tacoma</a> (102,327 units), and the next highest seller was the the Great Grandaddy of the Compact Truck Segment, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/ranger">Ford Ranger</a> (just 51,097 units).<br /> <br /> What's more, the compact truck market is declining, VW doesn't have many dealerships in truck-happy areas of the nation and the so-called "chicken tax" would add a 25% tariff to the Argentina-built Amarok. Add in the fact that Jacoby says there are more pressing vehicular needs that the German automaker needs to concentrate on. <br /> The<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/ram+hd"> 2010 Dodge Ram Power Wagon</a> is one very capable full-size pickup truck. Its 383-horsepower HEMI V8 engine is but a small part of a rock-traversing equation that includes a solid front axle, electronic sway bar disconnect and a pair of limited-slip differentials. And while the Power Wagon has its way with the desert rocks, it can also tow over 10,000 pounds and tote nearly 2,000 more in the bed. <br /> <br /> The Power Wagon appears to be the heavy duty, no-nonsense off-roader that Ram fans have come to expect since the variant first came online in 2005. <em>Motor Trend</em> magazine's 2010 Truck of the Year competition was an odd one this year. Only four models met MT's criteria of being new or substantially changed from the previous model year. Of those, only two were actual work trucks: the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/ram+hd">2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/tundra">Toyota Tundra</a> 4.6-liter work truck. The other two contenders, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/raptor">Ford F-150 SVT Raptor</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/transit+connect">Transit Connect</a>, likely won't ever do much of the work that we normally associate with trucks (hauling, towing, etc.). Perhaps that hindered their chances at winning the coveted Golden Calipers, because the truck that did win was the purest pickup of them all. <br />

If you hadn't guessed yet, the <em>Motor Trend</em> 2010 Truck of the Year is the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty, which was substantially redesigned for the 2010 model year. We'll let the <em>MT</em> editors explain why the Ram HD was their unanimous choice, but the gist is that it arrives to market a full year ahead of substantially new versions of Ford and General Motors' heavy-duty trucks. As such, it will be the reigning HD truck in nearly every category that matters to heavy-duty pickup buyers, at least for a model year or two. <br />

Not to take away from the Dodge's victory, but we would've chosen the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor if it were our award to give. While the Ram HD no doubt beats it in every measure as a work truck, the Raptor is extra special if for no other reason than that it shows this industry of ours still has a little spark of life left. Ford deserves credit for not only driving out on a limb with the Raptor but also handing its development over to SVT, which guaranteed the final product offer legitimate high performance. <br />

That's the question <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/01/report-kia-soulster-headed-for-production/">we've all been asking</a> since <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/kia">Kia</a> showed off its funky <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/11/detroit-2009-kia-soulster-guns-for-fun-and-frolic/">Soul'ster concept</a> earlier this year at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/DetroitAutoShow/">Detroit Auto Show</a>. We've been <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/09/kia-soulster-considered-for-production/">hearing</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/01/report-kia-soulster-headed-for-production/">rumblings</a> that there's a solid push from inside the Korean automaker's own ranks to put the little trucklet into production, and it appears that's still the case.<br />

Speaking to our friends at PickupTrucks.com at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a>, Tom Kearns, Kia North America's Chief Designer, said, "Kia's internal design community is firmly behind building the Soul'ster. We'd like to see it happen. There's no official decision to build it but it's still possible."<br />

The base <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/soul">Kia Soul</a> starts at $13,995, and though we have no idea what Kia might charge the Soul'ster if it were to make it to U.S. dealerships, the open-bed unibody would likely have its own little niche to itself as it figures to be significantly smaller and cheaper than vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ridgeline">Honda Ridgeline</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/NUMMI/">NUMMI</a>'s loss will be San Antonio's gain. Toyota is adding a second shift at its truck plant and looking to hire 850 workers for the production increase, and since Toyota's suppliers are located on-site, they're also adding a second shift and hiring. <br />
<br />
The relocated Tacoma production from NUMMI is projected to roll 150,000 vehicles out per year, still below the 200,000 trucks Toyota wanted to be making when it launched the current Tundra. It's a way for Toyota to hedge its pickup bets. When the market for the biggies sags, Tacomas may be more appealing; the plant could adjust its mix and keep going. While Toyota's pickup volume is a small slice of the market, San Antonio may wind up loving the Tundra and Tacoma in a big way. <br />

Now that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/tata">Tata</a> has put the World's Cheapest Car on the market, is the Indian automaker ready to make a similar assault on the pickup truck market? Judging by a recent spy shot, it seems likely. It's impossible to know for sure, but the truck's three-lug wheels, single windshield wiper and dash layout indicate that this pickup might be based on the diminutive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Nano/">Nano</a>.<br />

Indian news outlets report that the pickup is codenamed Penguin and is powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine that displaces 350cc and is based on a slice of the Tata Ace and Indica engine block. That big thumper is hooked directly to the rear axle, an arrangement that will do away with the driveshaft and help lower cost. No word on if or when the Nano truck is slated for an official introduction. <em>Hat tip to Shrawan!</em><br />

    <title><![CDATA[REPORT: Chrysler still considering unibody Dakota replacement]]></title>

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/dakota">Dodge Dakota</a> -- as we know it today -- will go away in 2011, but looking at current sales of the mid-size pickup, it may as well be dead already. Chrysler has only sold 10,000 Dakotas this year, with an anemic 663 units cleared in November. But while the Dakota is selling poorly (it's not helped by being too close in price to the much more capable <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/dakota">Ram</a>), it doesn't necessarily mean that the enigmatic pickup won't live on in another form. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/04/ram-considering-a-new-mid-size-unibody-pickup-to-replace-dakota/">Coinciding with earlier reports</a>, the <em>Detroit News</em> says Chrysler is contemplating a unibody Dakota to replace the current model. A more fuel efficient car-based platform could yield better efficiency, especially when paired with a turbocharged four cylinder with direct injection. The car-based truck probably wouldn't be a hauler but it would still have a functional bed similar to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ridgeline">Honda Ridgeline</a>, and AWD would likely be an available option. Fred Diaz, the new head of the Ram brand, told the <em>DN</em> that the Pentastar is looking both at Fiat and from within its own stable of vehicles for any platforms that could help make the unibody Dakota a possibility, adding, "The emphasis is going to be on getting a vehicle that is still true to the Ram brand image and also gets excellent miles per gallon rating and at an attractive price point." Chrysler was reportedly already working on a unibody Dakota when money troubles forced the idea to the back burner. <br />

While we like the idea of a fuel efficient pickup that can do most of the things that a body on frame truck can do, we're wondering if the truck-buying public will embrace the idea. The best example of a unibody pickup, the Honda Ridgeline, has been anything but a massive commercial hit and midsize trucks are already a dying breed, with only five percent of the overall vehicle market. But if Chrysler wants to make Ram its own brand, we're guessing that the Pentastar's truck company is going to need more than one vehicle.<br />

We're always up for a good cause, and that's exactly what this <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> Super Duty Fire Truck represents. According to Ford, it will make an initial $10,000 contribution to the Los Angeles County Firefighters Widows and Orphans Fund, plus $10 for each person that visits its stand at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a> and another $20 for every person that takes a test drive in a new Ford vehicle throughout the duration of the show - up to a maximum of another $6,000 per day.<br />
<br />
Naturally, Ford is looking for a little exposure along the way, and we don't really have any problem with that. After all, it's certainly not uncommon to see <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/f-series+super+duty">Super Duty</a> chassis cabs upfitted as fire department vehicles, and that's exactly what Ford has on display right now in LA. Included in the makeover are a 300-gallon water tank, eight-gallon foam cell, two pumps, an electric rewind reel with 150 feet of hose, three-stage winch with 8,000-pound capacity and 100 feet of wire rope.<br />

Naturally, the top-spec 6.7-liter turbocharged diesel <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/31/beware-the-scorpion-2011-ford-super-duty-gets-all-new-6-7-liter/">Power Stroke V8 engine</a> is present and accounted for, along with a heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission that features available Live Drive Power Take Off (PTO), which allows the truck's engine to power axillary equipment whether the truck is stationary or in motion. So, why not wave a magic wand and make that happen? In a word: Chickens.<br /> <br /> Sorry, come again? What do chickens have to do with vans and pickups? It's all a bit odd, but back in the early Sixties, the United States levied a 25% tax on potato starch, Dextrin, brandy, and light trucks in response to French and German tariffs on imported U.S. chicken. Yes, really.<br /> <br /> As such, importing any light trucks from overseas into the States can be an expensive proposition, taking away pretty much any chance of profitability. Well looky here - it's the latest in a long line of oddly named trucks from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a>. This time, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/17/volkswagen-amarok-to-tackle-desert-as-official-support-vehicle-o/">Amarok</a> refers to a cryptozoological Inuit giant wolf-creature that eats those who dares to hunt alone. No really. Regardless, the Amarok is VW's first pickup truck since the Caddy, aka the Rabbitamino first released in 1980. Aside from being thirty-years more new, the Amarok looks to be a bit, well, more stout.<br />
<br />
Spartan, too - especially the no frills interior. And here's the really good part for you truck dudes - it's a real-deal, honest-to-goodness body-on-frame worker bee. Meaning it can haul 2,300 pounds and tow nearly three tons (5,600 pounds) when equipped with VW's 2.0-liter common-rail turbo diesel four-cylinder that's good for 163 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.<br />
<br />
A smaller diesel motor with 122 hp and 250 torques will be an option, as well as a direct-injected gasoline engine. True, it's not a Ford F-450 Super Duty. But then again, what is? And really, if hauling a couple of jet skis or a track car are your thing (as opposed to say a yacht), the Amarok could be your truck. If you live in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa or Australia. Predictably we can't get the Argentinian-built Amarok here. If you've been following the Toyota Tundra rust saga, you're aware that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/23/toyota-reportedly-forced-to-submit-data-on-tundra-frame-rust-to/">NHSTA recently requested data from Toyota</a> about the purported frame corrosion affecting 2000 and 2001 models. Today, Toyota has extended that recall to include the 2002-03 model years, saying that a small number of trucks could suffer from frame corrosion that could cause the spare tire to detach from its underbody housing. That brings the total up to 110,000 Tundras located in 20 cold-weather states and the District of Columbia.<br />
<br />

<br /> The GMT900 platform is by far the highest volume chassis General Motors has here in the States, as it underpins the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Avalanche and Suburban, the Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV, and the GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL. We never had any doubt that GM would continue to build body-on-frame trucks in the future, but with demand for SUVs shrinking quickly, some thought the body-on-frame SUV would soon be a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/27/tahoe-yukon-and-escalade-not-being-replaced/">thing of the pas</a>t. Maybe not. <br /> <br /> Our friends over at Pickuptrucks.com <a href="http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2009/11/cosma-to-build-frames-for-gms-next-generation-halfton-pickups.html">are reporting</a> that the next generation of the GMT platform will be produced by Magna International's Cosma in Canada and Mexico - and that new platform will underpin the next-generation of GM SUVs along with the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado. Pickuptrucks quotes Magna spokesperson Scott Worden as confirming that the next generation of GM's large SUVs will come with the body-on-frame architecture. This sort of chassis tends to add weight versus a unibody platform, but it also adds capability for towing and payload at lower cost. <br /> <br /> We're not really all the surprised that GM will continue to build BOF SUVs, especially when considering that the General sold a combined 200,000 copies of the Suburban, Yukon, Tahoe and Escalade last month alone. And last we checked, these are still relatively expensive vehicles that bring in quite a bit of desperately needed profit. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began a preliminary evaluation last month of rusting Tundra frames from the 2000 and 2001 model years. Around 200 complaints had been registered before the NHTSA commenced its investigation, with upwards of seventy more complaints coming in since then.<br />
<br />
As with the rusting Tacoma frames, the Tundra members in question were made by Dana. Importantly, though, the Tundra examination is focused only on "the cross member that supports the spare tire -- not the entire frame." Still, that area has been blamed by consumers for the spare tire coming loose, and for brake system failures due to corrosion at the brake line mounting points.<br />
<br />
Toyota ended up buying back Tacomas or extending warranties to settle the rust issue, but Tundra frames were built at different Dana plants and to different specifications, so the Tundra issue is not assumed to be the same as the Tacoma issue. Toyota had until last week to submit its information on the frames, now the NHTSA will need to decide what to do next.<br />

Owners of model year 2007-2008 Jeep Wranglers with automatic transmissions may have to visit their local dealers as Chrysler is recalling 161,450 of the SUVs over potential transmission overheating problems. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), Wrangler models manufactured between June 2006 and July 2008 with automatic transmissions were not fitted with a transmission fluid temperature warning system. If the AT fluid in the affected vehicles overheats, it may boil over and come in contact with hot engine or exhaust components - possibly leading to a fire.<br />
<br />
To help alert drivers that their Jeep's transmission is overheating, dealers will inspect and install a visual "Hot Oil" message in the instrument cluster accompanied by an audible chime to indicate the elevated fluid temperature. The service will be performed free of charge starting in December. The image seen above is that of Mahindra's "dealership network." We're putting quotes on that because the Indian automaker says on its website that the dots represent only "potential" outlets for their <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/07/u-s-mahindra-pickup-reportedly-stalled-until-february/?extpar=autob">forthcoming small diesel pickup trucks</a>.<br />

Even if the map hasn't been finalized (and doesn't have an associated time frame for each franchise coming on-line), the map is interesting because it illustrates widespread interest in the brand. Credit for that in part should go to the promise of a robust, cheap, and fuel-efficient small truck from a major global player - but it should be equally predictable because there are lots of showrooms sitting empty (or on their way to doing so) thanks to the downsizing of dealer networks associated with General Motors, Chrysler and other automakers. <br />
<br />
We could have predicted widespread traction for the brand in regions like the Midwest and even the Northeast, but the concentration of likely franchises in Florida surprises us. Either way, we'll have to wait a bit longer to see just who finally ends up selling the automaker's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/10/appalachian-breakdown-mahindra-reportedly-dumps-regional-pickup/">TR20 and TR40 models</a> - they are expected to go on sale in the first quarter of next year. <em>Hat tip to Sunny B!</em><br />

As a brand, Hummer has been in limbo since General Motors announced it was selling the downtrodden marque to China's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/09/breaking-gm-source-say-hummer-sold-to-chinese/">Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. Ltd</a>. Speculation remains that the sale could be completed on or around December 1, pending approval from GM and the Chinese government. For now, everything is on hold, though Tengzhong and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/16/cadillac-manager-appointed-hummer-ceo/">new Hummer CEO Jim Taylor</a> are apparently still working hard to plan Hummer's future.<br />

First on the "Honey Do" list is to arrest the free-fall of Hummer sales. Right now, sales are down 64% on the year to about 8,500 units, but Hummer is looking for 25,000 sales in 2010. That will be a tough nut to crack, but Automotive News reports that the company optimistically plans to get things done in part with some aggressive marketing. Ultimately, however, new product will be needed to get dealerships buzzing with customers again. In the meantime, Hummer's 154 U.S. dealers need more inventory in the showrooms to help move metal. <em>AN says</em> that dealers only have 1,300 units in stock, compared to the 7,400 vehicles at the same time in 2008. <br />

The last piece of the Hummer reclamation project is adding those new models. When Tengzhong gets the keys to the Hummer kingdom, it will also receive engineering plans for the H4, a new smaller model that is reportedly based on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/17/hummer-hx-design-managers-talk-about-their-new-concept/">HX Concept</a> from the 2008 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>. Taylor reportedly told AN that Hummer's Jeep Wrangler fighter could arrive within three years. Also possible is an even smaller Hummer H5, which would help the SUV automaker to meet future CAFE requirements. Taylor even goes as far as to say that the smaller H4 and H5 could one day replace the brand's heavier and thirstier H2 and H3 mainstays. The next big challenge for Hummer once the sale becomes final is to find a manufacturing partner to build these vehicles. GM will reportedly cease building Hummer models as early as the end of 2010.<br />

Two months from now, Volkswagen will be expanding its involvement in the annual Dakar Rally in South America. Just as they did last January, factory-backed teams will be competing in the 5.600 mile race through Argentina and Chile. However, this time, those outfits will be fielding four race Touaregs rather than two. <br />
<br />
Perhaps more interesting is official word that VW's new Amarok pickup truck will be the official support truck of the for the entire rally. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has struck a deal with the race organizers, and as a result, the specially outfitted Amaroks will travel the same route as the competitors carrying media, checking out route conditions, and carrying VW crews and race organizers. The Amarok will be built by VW in Argentina starting in 2010, but the automaker has repeatedly said the truck won't be offered in the U.S. market. When <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/dodge/">Dodge</a> announced that it wouldn't be sharing its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/ram+1500">Ram</a> platform with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/nissan/">Nissan</a>, we just kind of assumed that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Titan/">Titan</a> was going to go the way of the Do Do. Why? Because Titan sales are the suck. Nissan has only sold 15,393 copies of its largest truck through the first <em>10 months</em> of the year. For perspective, Ford sold more F-150s in the first two weeks of October than Nissan has sold in 43 weeks. Last year wasn't much better either, as only 30,000 customers walked out of a Nissan dealer with a new Titan.<br />
<br />
But if a report from <em>Inside Line</em> is to be believed, the Titan will live on. Renault/Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn reportedly told IL that "Titan will have a replacement, we are staying in the large pickup truck market." It makes a bit of sense that there will be another Titan given the fact that Nissan also uses the basic platform for the Infiniti QX56 and the Nissan Armada. But then again those portly SUVs aren't exactly flying off the shelf, either. <br />
<br />
Speculation is that Nissan could be looking for an outside partner (or already have one) to collaborate on a new pickup. We're thinking one candidate could be Toyota. The only other Japanese automaker competing directly with the domestics in the U.S. half-ton pickup truck market, Toyota was expecting to produce 200,000 units per year of the Tundra when the it launched, but has sold only 66,000 through October. Teaming up with Nissan would help bring costs down, soak up extra production capacity and mitigate the risk inherent in competing against Ford, GM and Chrysler at what they do best. <br />

Unless we're talking about a Porsche 917/30 or a Plymouth Superbird. Those cars have some very fine rear extensions. Okay, fine - a six-foot protrusion looks a little bit weird when growing out of a semi-truck's rear. Happy?<br /> <br /> But a boat-tailed tractor trailer might be just what we need. Why? Because when fitted with such a piece of aerodynamic kit, total fuel-consumption reportedly drops by 7.5%. The tests in question were conducted by the Dutch PART (Platform for Aerodynamic Road Transport) public-private partnership platform on public roads. One truck without any aero-aid was driven around for a year, as was another truck with the boat-tail.<br /> <br /> Not only did the boat-tailed machine get a 7.5% fuel economy bump, but at the same time, emissions were slashed by about the same margin.
